  1. Advocacy through Storytelling: Skill Building for Social Workers at All Levels of Practice

    The field of social work require education and professional competencies for social workers to be equipped to promote and advocate for equity and justice in their practice. Story-telling is an uniquely powerful way to engage in advocacy. As social workers, our professional experience at any level (micro, mezzo, and macro) can help guide decision-makers (within institutions, organizations, and in policy-making) to make informed decisions based on best practices and social work values and ethics. Join us for an interactive workshop to learn more about what makes storytelling an effective method for advocacy and tips for telling your own story.

  2. Where does Power Live? Tools for Civic Engagement and Electoral Wellness (Session 1)

    September 22, 2024 - 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET

    The purpose of the Electoral Wellness (Civic Engagement & Mental/Emotional Wellbeing) series is to invite the SSW DEI community into an ongoing conversation about power and hope during the Fall 2024 election cycle in a way that is meant to build trust and self-awareness. This experiential series will allow SSW students, faculty, and staff to build relationships in a setting that is grounded in restorative justice practices such as trust-building and active listening. This calendar of three sessions will use interactive activities to support participants in engaging in mindfulness and collective visioning as tools to protect hopefulness and plan for a socially just future in the face of uncertainty and political unrest.

    Outcomes: Participants will

    Experience Restorative Justice  values in practice 

    Engage in self-awareness by naming feelings through the use of art

    Examine power checks and balances within National and State Governments

    Explore electoral hopes and fears

    Discuss practices for discussing the election with clients

    Practice grounding tools in the space that can be used with clients in the field

    Engage in a collective visioning exercise

    Process emotions following the 2024 election

    We are navigating unprecedented events in the US and around the world. How do we engage in community action and social change effectively and sustainably? What are the roles that we can take to promote democracy, inclusion, and solidarity during times of confusion and overwhelm? Deepa Iyer, a South Asian American advocate and writer, will be addressing these inquiries during a workshop on September 26th from 12:00-2:00 pm at the School of

    Deepa Iyer is a multi-genre author of three books including We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future, Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection, and We Are The Builders! She has led and supported programs to catalyze racial and immigrant justice for over 20 years. Deepa currently leads the SolidarityIs program at the Building Movement Project.
