    RSVP

Zoom Link will be sent prior to program

In our time together we can draw strength and inspiration from grassroots organizers around the country that have created visions for better futures and caring communities. Let’s ground this moment from the perspective of movement veterans who have faced violent, racist opposition for decades and become inspired by movement young people fighting in the streets today. Mateo Nube of Movement Generation wrote,

“In comic books, it’s the superheroes who defeat fascism. In the real world, common folk do. Bound together. By purpose, care, and a deep love for a better society.”

Mateo lived through multiple military coups as a child in Bolivia.

Link to his recent article: Meeting Chaos With Calm: How To Prepare For A Potential Coup. We will keep our time together Monday at 1pm relatively informal but it will be a space to come together as a community and we’ll provide a loose agenda and possible focus groups topics based on what is on the forefront of your minds. A few highlights Mateo shared that may be helpful for this moment:

“Keep calm: ...Caring for each other, loving one another, soothing each other: all will be paramount in the coming weeks...

Stay Prepared: ...Be networked with loved ones who live near you, with whom you can share and with whom you can collectivize meeting basic needs...

Anticipate Needs: ...Reach out to a neighbor or friend to see if they are okay. Asking, ‘How are you doing? Are you all stocked up on groceries? Your meds? Batteries?’ or offering, ‘I have extra N95s and collards in my garden!’ will go a long way towards threading that sense of community and solidarity that will see us through...

Gear Up Emotionally: ...Weave together our networks of shared care as tightly as possible...”

The discussion will be facilitated by Diana Seales, the incoming CASC Director, in partnership with the CASC staff. Please visit the CASC Website to learn more about Diana

  7. U-M MLK Health Sciences Keynote - Where Do We Go From Here: Body Politics and Movement Towards Racial Empowerment U-M MLK Health Sciences Keynote - Where Do We Go From Here: Body Politics and Movement Towards Racial Empowerment

    January 18, 2021 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET

Bodies represent the sites of socially constructed differences and power relations such that the personal is political. ‘Politics’ govern the dynamics of who, what, when, how, and why of human experiences. Body politics based on racial or ethnic ascriptions (and other intersecting elements such as gender, sexuality, age, social class, ability, etc.) govern and adversely affect the overall health and wellness of bodies of Color in general, and Black bodies in particular by impacting their abilities, opportunities, access (inclusion/exclusion), care/treatment, and the overall nature of their experiences.

As such, body politics create and contribute to health disparities. However, movement offers a variety of health benefits and thus, is a source of empowerment for racially politicized bodies. This event will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Monique Butler that will address the theme Where Do We Go From Here: Body Politics and Movement Towards Racial Empowerment.

This event is sponsored by the U-M Health Sciences units.
