Last winter, the Critical Intersectionality Learning Community began exploring how timebanks could be used as a means to put the social work values into practice. This year, the community wants you to join a timebank.
What is a Timebank?
Timebanks are reciprocity-based work trading systems where time is the currency. Members earn credits by sharing their time, skills and/or resources, and in turn, receive services and resources from others. The “bank” provides an infrastructure to connect unmet needs with untapped resources.
A timebank member may give an hour to drive another member to a doctor’s appointment, or help with yardwork. In return, they might take a yoga class or receive help with their taxes. Some timebanks have community gardens or offer other such resources. Timebanks also host a variety of social events – from pool parties to family game nights to happy hours – which build relationships that further strengthen the community.
Why join a Timebank?
Timebanks aim to create sharing, caring and resilient communities incorporating five core beliefs:
- Everyone is an asset - we all have something to give
- Some work is beyond a monetary price
- Reciprocity in helping
- Community and social networks are necessary
- Respect for all people - everyone has a voice and accountability
Joining a timebank is a great way to promote social justice and enrich your experience as a member of the Michigan Social Work community. Furthermore, connecting as a group is a simple yet meaningful way we can increase the School’s involvement beyond Ann Arbor.
Each timebank (see right column) has their own culture and priorities, which is reflected on their website. To join, simply apply and schedule your short orientation, or contact the coordinator of the timebank to learn more.
We would love to hear from those within our community who have already participated in timebanking. Please email us and tell us about your experiences.
