Youth Work Yields Mutual Understanding

Zach Antil

During the past six months in the field, I’ve cooked meals for thirty people, taught youth how to use a dental dam and completed a lot of intakes. What I appreciate most about my field placement is the broad range of work I was able to do. I’ve had the opportunity to touch on many aspects of social work, such as policy, mental health and program evaluation. Working with twenty or more young people a day can make you feel like you’re running a 5k. But, it’s been a great opportunity for me to continue unlearning a lot of the thoughts I had about race, class, gender identity and sexual orientation. When you listen to someone or offer an affirming presence- stories and healing both happen.
