Fall 2020 MSW SEED Orientation

To prepare for your social work journey at the U-M School of Social Work, all MSW students should plan to participate in virtual SEED Orientation during the week of August 24th. A variety of synchronous and asynchronous orientation sessions and information will be available. Incoming MSW students will be added to Canvas:: Fall SEED Orientation and be provided with the name of their faculty advisor prior to August 24th.

The goals of SEED include strengthening connection and community at the School of Social Work, PODS (privilege, oppression, diversity, & social justice), and learning foundation-level social work skills.

Please review the tentative SEED Orientation schedule to plan your week of August 24th.

Course Enrollment Petition

To be considered for entry into a closed course, you must submit a Course Enrollment Petition. Individual faculty members cannot grant permission into a closed course and the School does not utilize the University waitlist system.
Upon receiving an email decision on submitted course enrollment petitions, we ask that you follow through with any steps you may be given by the Registrar's Office (i.e. drop a course, add a course, etc.) as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that permissions for courses do expire and we can be more responsive to new petitions when students have followed through with recommended actions.

Students may petition to enter a closed course via the Course Enrollment Petition following their registration appointment time/date.

Dean's Welcome

Dear Incoming Students,

Welcome to the University of Michigan School Social Work, where we strive to deliver the very best MSW education.

You have chosen the profession of social work at a time when our world has changed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Social work is needed now more than ever; to maintain social connections at this time of social distancing; to work for health equity; to assure financial help for those who are hardest hit economically; and to help people, including other health professionals, to manage the demands and the emotions of this crisis. We promise to deliver, as we always have, a top-notch MSW education that will position you to be a leader in the new future of social work practice.

You will choose your courses from a rich curriculum that allows for a diverse set of specializations in micro and macro practice. I am proud of the School's deep and genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, which will infuse your courses and your field placement. Another of the School's distinctive strengths is the talented and diverse student body; fellow students will be an important part of your learning experience. Our dedicated faculty and staff go the extra mile to support students to realize the utmost success in their studies.

Congratulations on your acceptance to the School. I wish you a transformative educational experience at the U of M, and I look forward to getting to meet you at orientation.

With a hearty welcome, and Go Blue,

Lynn Videka
