Roxanna I. Duntley-Matos

PhD Student. Social Work/Anthropology Graduate - 2011

Roxanna Duntley-Matos is a doctoral candidate in the joint Anthropology and Social Work program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In 1999 she founded the first Latino community organization in Washtenaw County which she continues to direct at the present time. She received the 2002 Circle Award from the University of Michigan for excellence in community organizing among the Latino immigrant population. Roxanna has extensive experience collaborating with the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Public school system to improve the educational opportunities of immigrant and underprivileged youth. She has worked in the capacity of cultural competence consultant for the WISD and as one of the initial First Step program Latino coordinators. Roxanna also has more than five years experience working as a team leader and therapist in the field of traumatic brain injury. She received the Cambridge Who’s Who VIP award in 2007 for excellence in community based therapy and team leadership in this field. Her ethnographic research includes “Institutional Sources of Division and Apathy among Michigan’s Homeless” (1992), Representations, Power and Contradictions: The Women’s Communal Movement of Morazán, El Salvador—Master’s Thesis (1998), “Racially Discriminatory Practices in a Women’s Community Bank in Costa Rica” (2000). Her current research interest relates to the integration of social work and anthropology critical paradigms to understand the conditions which enable organized underprivileged youth and families to create spaces for agency and academic success within a context of transnational politico-economic forces and university influence.
