Open letter to the Michigan State University community

To the Michigan State University community:

On March 5, Richard Spencer is scheduled to speak at the Michigan State University (MSU) campus. The University of Michigan School of Social Work community is deeply concerned for the emotional and physical safety of all people who may be harmed directly and indirectly by this event.

The ideas and values of white supremacists, such as Richard Spencer, and other hate groups are in direct opposition to the core values of the social work profession, specifically the dignity and worth of the person and the pursuit of social justice. We, the U-M social work community, are with MSU in their rejection of this group's racist, hateful and unjust purpose. In the face of blatantly racist and divisive agendas by white supremacist groups, we are reaching out to our neighbors to create a unified front; promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and safety for all humankind.

Against oppression, racism, and all forms of injustice, we must come together. White supremacy will not end when Richard Spencer has finished his speech and neither should our commitment to supporting each other in the pursuit of social justice.

In Solidarity,
