Transforming Youth Suicide Prevention in Michigan - 3 (FY22)

Ewell Foster, Cynthia

PI

Building on a solid base established with previous SAMHSA funding, Transforming Youth Suicide Prevention in Michigan, Phase 3 (TYSP-Mi3) is designed to impact rates of youth/young adult suicide by institutionalizing suicide prevention as core priority in Michigan’s child welfare infrastructure and within a growing network of emergency departments. At the same time it will support community-based implementation of evidence-based suicide prevention strategies. Populations of focus include two high risk groups: 1) youth ages 10-24 seeking emergency services, and 2) CW-involved youth. The University of Michigan’s Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES), the largest dedicated psychiatric ED in Michigan, will serve as a Technical Assistance Center to support dissemination and implementation of suicide assessment and brief intervention strategies to at least eight general medical EDs across the state. The child welfare collaboration begun with Cohort 9 funding will continue, capitalizing on lessons learned with a focus on training, policy, protocol, and referral network development designed to support the child welfare workforce as suicide prevention gatekeepers. The Cohort 9 pilot establishing screening of youth entering foster care will expand with the goal of moving statewide. Youth serving professionals will participate in safeTALK, ASIST, Suicide to Hope, and AMSR to strengthen the network of persons able and willing to help a youth/young adult in crisis. Finally, the new state suicide prevention website will be enhanced to provide resources and support for community-based postvention services. The TYSP-Mi3 rogram proposes to serve over 2,000 persons/year and almost 13,000 over the life of the grant. Government and non-governmental work groups will continue to advise the program and each other to enhance communication and strategic planning to ensure a “Suicide-Safe Michigan.”
