Cristina Bares

Associate Professor of Social Work

Cristina Bares, PhD '07, was a developmental psychologist with training in behavioral genetics and advanced statistical modeling. Bares employed multiple methodologies to examine the biological, psychological and contextual determinants of child and adolescent health.

She earned a Joint PhD in Social Work and Psychology at the School of Social Work and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Curtis Center. She returned to the School as an assistant professor in 2015. Trained as a developmental psychologist, she used her comprehensive knowledge of statistics and genetics to examine the risk factors of anxiety, depression and substance use in children and adolescents. In 2021, she received an award from the Council of Social Work Education's Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education, which she used to fund the development of a new course in the Global Social Work Pathway.

Cristina Bares died on May 28, 2023. Read her obituary here. She was a kind, gracious, accomplished and smart colleague, teacher and mentor. She has left an impact on all who knew her, and we mourn her loss.
