2023 Advances in Child Maltreatment Prevention

The Advances in Child Maltreatment Prevention speaker series was created by Todd Herrenkohl, Marion Elizabeth Blue Professor of Children and Families. The speaker series features the work of leading prevention and child welfare scholars engaged in efforts to strengthen and reform child‑serving systems. The series provides a forum for new and emerging knowledge from the social sciences and the helping professions that can improve the health and well-being of vulnerable children and their families.

Preventing Human Trafficking Amonth Youth: Leveraging Survivor Insights

Michelle Munro-Kramer, PhD

Assistant Professor, the Suzanne Bellinger Feetham Professor of Nursing, the Director of Global Programs, University of Michigan School of Nursing

Dr. Michelle Munro-Kramer is an Assistant Professor, the Suzanne Bellinger Feetham Professor of Nursing, and the Director of Global Programs at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife and practices per diem at the Washtenaw County Health Department. Her program of research focuses on gender-based violence prevention and response, primarily among college-age youth, within domestic and international contexts. As part of the inaugural Johnson & Johnson Nurse Innovation Fellowship, she is interested in leveraging nurses’ creativity to develop innovative solutions to complex health and human rights issues such as intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. Her research projects approach these topics using a trauma-informed and patient-centered lens. She uses mixed methods and participatory action research to understand the experiences of vulnerable populations in order to inform intervention development. Her global health field work has included Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia and Zambia.

Kwami P. Adoboe-Herrera, BS

Speaker, Consultant, Anti-Trafficking Advocate

Kwami Adoboe-Herrera is a speaker, consultant, and anti-trafficking advocate. As a survivor, he understands the tragic impact of human trafficking all around us. His lived experience shaped his career and interests, which led him to advocate for policies that assist victims as they navigate life after being trafficked. Break the Chain was a documentary that featured Kwami. The film shows how human trafficking goes unnoticed in our own backyards. Break the Chain was created to provide a reliable and educational entertainment resource for use in training and community awareness events across the United States. Kwami is currently a Board member of Not for Sale: One Step at a Time, an organization that raises awareness and provides hope to communities throughout Ohio, America, and the world. President Trump appointed Kwami to the United States Advisory Council on Human Trafficking on December 22, 2020. The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act (JVTA), enacted on May 29, 2015, established the United States Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, which provides a formal platform for trafficking survivors to advise and make recommendations on federal anti-trafficking policies to the President's Inter-agency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (PITF). Kwami's goals are to raise awareness, reduce the risk of victimization, educate members of the government and the general public, and advocate for victim protection and wellness. Kwami earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Walsh University. His ultimate goal is to work for the federal government, rescuing victims from human traffickers. I believe that with God's assistance, we will be able to defeat this heinous crime against human life.
