I was abroad for 10 weeks for my Global Independent Study project. My project involved working with ISEE Social Service Center in Wuhan, China to participate in direct services to older adults. I also conducted 14 interviews with 5 social workers, 2 administrative staff from the social service agency, 2 Street Bureau officials, and 2 Community Committee officials to strategically challenge the ambiguity of social service agencies.
Please tell me about your project and what that experience was like for you.
Before writing the proposal of my GIS, I only had a rough idea about this project. When I started writing it, I had to break this large topic into small fractions, which advanced my knowledge in this field as well.
What advice would you give, based on your own experience, to students considering Global Independent Study?
Always have a backup plan if things do not work out well. It can be the agency they select don't fit well with the purpose of the study or rejections from additional funding opportunities, we need to understand the uncertainty, tolerate it, and be open to any changes of the original plan.
