My primary research theme of late has been the long-term course and treatment of major depressive disorder. Recent book chapters, papers, and presentations have focused upon various facets of this issue, including refinement of a treatment algorithm for clinicians and comprehensive guidelines for management of side effects. Clinical assessment of recurrent depression and the accompanying neuroendocrine parameters in psychiatric patients are used to classify, monitor, predict treatment response and understand the pathophysiology of patients with various diagnostic subtypes. Extended maintenance treatment is of particular interest, and data continue to be generated which support the efficacy of pharmacotherapy beyond the acute stage. Other research areas include continued involvement with the University of Michigan's NIAAA-funded Alcohol Research Center and the School of Social Work's Poverty, Risk and Mental Health NIMH-funded grant.
