The SSW Alumni Board Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 to help meet the growing needs of U-M MSW students who pursue national and global field experiences and/or global independent study projects. The Alumni Board strongly believes that as our world continues to change, it is increasingly important for social work students to gain a local, national and global perspective to address the many challenges that we face.

A global independent study offers students the ability to design a global social work opportunity in a foreign country while earning 1-3 elective credits. Accepted students receive a $2,500 scholarship to offset the cost of travel.

The Tinker Field Research Grants are funded by the Tinker Foundation, LACS, and the International Institute to support graduate students conducting preliminary fieldwork in Latin America.
Application Deadlines:
The Global Activities Scholars Program (GASP) is a unique opportunity for students interested in working with individuals, communities, and organizations in a global context as part of their On-Campus MSW program. Up to twelve incoming students will be selected each year to complete a global field placement during the spring/summer term (May - August). The purpose of the program is to provide students committed to global social work practice an opportunity to live in a foreign country while completing a part of their field placement requirement.
Applicants must select the Global Social Work pathway as their primary pathway or the Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, & Substance Abuse pathway as their primary pathway with the Global Social Work pathway as their secondary pathway.

SAIO grants fund travel to southern Africa for the purposes of research, creative collaborations, internship opportunities, and community-based or experiential learning projects. Grant recipients are expected to be involved with the Department of Afroamerican & African Studies (DAAS).
South African Initiative Office (SAIO) Summer Research Grant

The NPC offers an opportunity for doctoral students to submit research proposals related to preventing and alleviating poverty around the world.

The Mark and Myra Sorensen International Travel Scholarship is designed to support students who will participate in study, internship, volunteer, or research programs abroad. All U-M students who are enrolled in a degree program are eligible to apply, regardless of citizenship.
