As a Social Worker, I have over 25 years of experience in the field, first serving Community Mental Health clients in Washtenaw County, and then transitioning to positions with Washtenaw County’s Public Health Department. Opportunities there included serving as Worksite Wellness Coordinator for 1,400 county government employees, then moving to a Program Supervisor position in the Health Promotion/Disease Prevention division. Especially with the advent of what has come to be known as the “opioid epidemic” in the United States, and with the continuing losses of life to intentional and unintentional overdoses with fentanyl, it is increasingly recognized that addiction is a public health issue, and society’s response is best informed by the inclusion of public health perspectives.
