    For all students currently enrolled in field, the Field Educational Agreement is due to the Office of Field Instruction for Review.

    The Educational Agreement is not considered complete until the student AND the field instructor completes the steps for the Identifying Information and Assignments.

    A client's spiritual beliefs can significantly influence their behavior, cultural norms, schemas, how they deal with trauma, etc. Not to mention how spirituality impacts our personal lives as social workers! Come join the Interfaith Alliance in Spirituality Speed Dating where we will discuss spirituality and its impact on our work as social workers, our client's lives, our own lives, and how we can incorporate spirituality in our DEI and social justice efforts. A panel discussion will follow.

  5. Immigration Enforcement, Human Rights, and Social Justice »

    February 15, 2019 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    This mini-course focuses on the real community and personal impact of a public policy with sweeping national controversy, many deaths, and significant questions about social justice, racial discrimination, and even intent in the constitution. Because it is a mini-course, rather than a full course, this course will concentrate on one aspect of immigration policy? undocumented immigrants and the public policy strategy of enforcement for undocumented immigrants at the border and in the interior of the country. Along with discussion of the policies and practices of enforcement, we will bring local enforcement activities to the table and examine their impact on people, families, and Michigan communities. The discussion will have a global, national, state, and a local component. Students in this course will acquire the skills to critically analyze this aspect of immigration policy and its controversies. and about community and organization responses and activism.

  7. Social Work Services That Make a Difference: Meaningful Supports for Transgender Youth and Their Families »

    February 16, 2019 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

    This course will offer a working definition of terms, including Transgender, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Intersex, Gender Nonconforming, Non Binary, Intersex, Gender Transition, and Ally. Language and terminology will be examined with emphasis on using affirming language and avoiding offensive terminology. This course will examine multiple risk factors that impact transgender youth from a solution-focused lens. These risk factors include a 40 percent rate of attempted suicide, increased incidence of homelessness, school bullying and harassment, increased vulnerability to hate crimes (including assault, sexual assault and murder). Family relationship dynamics, along with strategies to increase family support, will be explored with an emphasis on increasing parental capacity to support the transgender youth. Family acceptance is a protective factor that is associated with a decrease in transgender youth homeless and a decline in the frequency and severity of mental health issues and an increase in overall wellness. Strategies to support and build upon family and school connectedness will be examined in this mini course. This mini course will also examine be the specific concerns that apply to transgender children younger than age 13. Understanding gender identity at younger ages will be explored, along with specific facts about working within elementary and preschool setting, and offering long term guidance and planning recommendations to parents and children that are developmentally appropriate. The gender transition process will be reviewed.

    The artists from Las Cafeteras, a six-piece band known for remixing roots music and telling modern-day stories discuss how they have incorporated activism and community engagement into their musical practice in their Los Angeles community and on the road.

    The event is presented by the University Musical Society and Co-sponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies, EXCEL, La Casa, LSA Latino/a Studies, MESA, and the School of Social Work.

  9. LGBTQ Health & Wellness Week 2019 Featured Speaker - Ignacio Rivera »

    February 18, 2019 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

    Ignacio G. Hutiá Xeiti Rivera (they/them) is a trans and queer activist of color with over 20 years of experience in anti-oppression and sexual liberation work including topics of: consent, sexual survivorship, and sex after sexual violence. Their work continues to center those at the margins, particularly people of color and those with queer and trans identities.
