About the Leon and Josephine Winkelman Memorial Lecture Series:

The Leon and Josephine Winkelman Lecture Series was established at the University of Michigan School of Social work by the Winkelman brothers - Stanley J., John, Frederick R., and Henry R. - as a memorial to their parents.

The lecture series provides a forum for the presentation of new and emerging knowledge from the social sciences and the helping professions in the field of gerontology and for the discussion of the applications of such knowledge to the development of social policy, the organization and management of social welfare services, and the delivery of social work services.

  5. Pics, Texts, and Tracking: Understanding and Addressing Digital Dating Abuse

    February 21, 2025 - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET

Relationship violence is still a common problem for young people today and while professionals may be familiar with common forms of power and control including verbal, emotional, and physical abuse, many adults are less familiar with the ways technology and social media can be used as tools of power and control in dating situations. This training will start by exploring the most common ways that technology and social media can be used in abusive situations and end with practical strategies that supportive adults can use to identify warning signs of digital dating abuse and have critical conversations with both survivors and perpetrators.

  6. 8th Annual Building Power Conference: Building Power Toward Collective Liberation

    February 21, 2025 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

The mission of Building Power is to center community knowledge in the fight against white extremism. Often in academic spaces, we do not learn from the activists, community leaders and organizers doing the work in our communities. We want to flip this narrative and provide a space for community leaders to be the teachers, and for students to engage in this type of learning in an accessible way.

  9. Community Conversation: Domestic Violence & the Course System

    February 24, 2025 - 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM ET

We invite you to a community conversation around domestic violence in the court system with special guest Dr. Daniel G. Saunders on February 24, 2025 at 6:30 pm.

We are trying out a unique format in which a guest speaker will present a 10 minute mini-lecture on the topic prior to our conversation. Additionally, students, staff and faculty from both the School of Social Work and the Law School are invited to attend.

Survivors of domestic abuse are often forced to co-parent with their abusers, experiencing continued abuse. A study led by Dr. Saunders found that judges, lawyers and litigators often have limited formal education around domestic violence abuse patterns. This often causes them to fail at intervening to prevent continued abuse.

Dr. Saunders will be joining us for a ten minute presentation about advocating for change in the family court system before we begin our conversation. Dr. Saunders is a Professor Emeritus within the School of Social Work who focuses on dating and domestic violence.

This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear!  If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)
