This year, we are asking all incoming students to read at least the first section of My Grandmother’s Hands by social worker Resmaa Menakem. This National Best Seller is a call to action for us all to understand how racism and white supremacy creates trauma in our minds, and in our bodies.

  7. Community Conversation - Mental Health and Disability: Addressing Unseen Challenges

    July 28, 2023 - 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET

We invite you to a Community Conversation on the topic of Mental Health and Disability: Addressing Unseen Challenges  on Friday, July 28, 2023 from 2pm-3pm.

The purpose of this community conversation is to delve into the intersection of mental health and disability, shedding light on the often unseen challenges faced by individuals navigating both realms. By exploring the unique struggles experienced by those dealing with mental health issues alongside disabilities, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the impact of social attitudes and perceptions on their well-being. Additionally, we seek to examine the barriers individuals may encounter in accessing mental healthcare and discuss strategies for promoting self-care and overall well-being. Through open dialogue and shared insights, we hope to create a supportive and informative space that encourages empathy, education, and action in addressing the needs of this diverse and often overlooked community.

This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear!  If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)

About the format. With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.
