The Strength of Refugees and Their Community: A Gallery and Opening Reception
August 27, 2019 to October 5, 2019
Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.
The opening reception will be on September 11th at 5:30 pm in Hatcher Gallery.
This exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security, Interpersonal Difficulties, Rooting Factors, Personal Growth, and Contribution.Speakers for the opening reception are:

Dr. Odessa Gonzalez Benson, PhD, Assistant Professor at UM School of Social Work
Ayah Kutmah, Founder of REvive
Dr. Mari Kira, PhD, Research Scientist at UM Psychology

Fall 2019 SEED Orientation
August 27, 2019 to August 30, 2019
Share, Explore, Engage, Discover (SEED) is the School of Social Work's orientation experience. SEED features programming tailored to incoming students. The goals of SEED include strengthening connection and community at the School of Social Work, exploring PODS (privilege, oppression, diversity, & social justice), and learning foundation-level social work skills.
New Student SEED Orientation for MSW students will be held on August 27, 28, and 29, with activities for specific groups scheduled for August 30th. Please carefully review the Fall SEED Orientation Schedule.
In addition, there will be a variety of optional social activities the weekend prior to and after SEED Orientation Week, as well as during SEED Week. These social events are optional and will be led by current MSW students. Feel free to join any or all social events!
Various activities will provide great opportunities to meet and connect with MSW students, faculty, and staff. During SEED Orientation students will also receive their faculty advisor assignment and attend a pre-field education workshop (if starting field in the fall).
