Social Justice in Social Work Research Symposium

Rogério M. Pinto, Associate Dean for Research, invites you to a celebration of social justice in social work research on Friday, March 9 from 8 am - 1 pm.
Join us as we acknowledge David Córdova, Edie Kieffer, and Sandra Momper for their research advancing social justice, and discuss how the SSW can best identify and enhance different types of research to increase social justice efforts.The day's efforts will be recorded and published in an upcoming white paper.

Forensic Interviewing of Children

This is an advanced methods mini-course focused on forensic interviewing of children. The mini-course is particularly relevant to interviewing children alleged to have been sexually abused, but also be relevant to gathering information from children about a spectrum of traumatic experiences. This mini-course will provide a critical review of the evidence/research that is relied upon in forensic interviewing of children and will provide information about best practice. The course takes a child-centered/social justice approach, will admonish professionals to take into account the child's needs, developmental stage, and functioning, as well as the specifics of the allegations, when conducting forensic interviews. ...

Family Psychoeducation Intervention in Work with Adults, Adolescents, Children and Their Families/Extended Support Networks
March 10, 2018 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET
This course will focus on developing the group work skills necessary to implement evidence-based family psychoeducation interventions in work with adults, adolescents, children and their families. Special emphasis will be given to the family psychoeducation approach using multiple family groups in the treatment of severe psychiatric disorders. This course will examine the theoretical and empirical foundations for family psychoeducation, as well as, the practice of multifamily group treatment in schizophrenia, bi-polar illness, major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder and with children and adolescents with serious mental illnesses.

ACT Raising Safe Kids Program Training

The ACT Raising Safe Kids Program 2-day Facilitator Training is the introductory training to prepare child and family professionals to conduct the 9-week parenting training program, ACT Raising Safe Kids, developed and coordinated by the APA Violence Prevention Office. The program is designed to have trained and certified professionals (ACT Facilitators) prepared to disseminate the program research-based curriculum and teach positive parenting skills and practices that create safe, nurturing, stable environments that prevent child maltreatment and its long term health, cognitive and behavioral consequences for children. The curriculum is based on knowledge about child development, the importance of relationships because abuse and violence happen in the context of relationships and the effectiveness of positive parenting skills and practices to prevent abuse. ...
