CASC Talk : Food and Social Justice
October 19, 2017 - 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET
Join us in a panel discussion on race, food sovereignty, and sustainability within the food justice movement. Panelists engaged in food justice efforts including organizers, activists, and advocates, will share their experiences, challenges, and strategies toward action, namely in urban neighborhoods. Light refreshments will be provided.
Panelists:
Jack Griffin is a graduate from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business with a Community Action and Social Change minor. He is the founded of Food Finders, a web-based app that helps users find free food resources that are closest to their home, school, or current location.
Food Gatherers, an organization that works to alleviate hunger in the Ann Arbor community. They distribute more than 1,000,000 pounds of food to 150 non-profits in the Ann Arbor area.
Annie Grech is a University of Michigan student pursuing a BS in Biochemistry. She is the President of the University of Michigan chapter of the Food Recovery Network, an organization that works to fight food waste and hunger by recovering perishable food that would otherwise go to waste.
Naim Edwards works in the city of Detroit as an Evnironmental Specialist. Along many other forms of environmental activism, Naim works with Voices for Earth Justice to engage the local community at an urban garden.

Change It Up! Bystander Intervention
October 20, 2017 - 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM ET
Change it Up! brings bystander intervention skills to the University of Michigan community for the purpose of building inclusive, respectful and safe communities. It is based on a nationally recognized four-stage bystander intervention model that helps individuals intervene in situations that negatively impact individuals, organizations, and the campus community.
You will learn to:
Identify self-awareness and social responsibility as qualities of strong personal leadership
Discuss your own and others' identities and experiences
Determine the various options for effectively intervening during a negative situation
Develop your ability to assess which intervention option is based on the situation
Discuss and practice how to leverage bystander intervention skills within their campus communities
You will benefit by:
Receiving high impact learning through educational theater
Increasing your motivation to intervene in harmful situations
Gaining ability to assess the effectiveness of multiple options for intervention
Expanding your skills and confidence to successfully intervene in harmful situations

Family Psychoeducation Intervention in Work with Adults, Adolescents, Children and Their Families/Extended Support Networks
October 21, 2017 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET
This course will focus on developing the group work skills necessary to implement evidence-based family psychoeducation interventions in work with adults, adolescents, children and their families. Special emphasis will be given to the family psychoeducation approach using multiple family groups in the treatment of severe psychiatric disorders. This course will examine the theoretical and empirical foundations for family psychoeducation, as well as, the practice of multifamily group treatment in schizophrenia, bi-polar illness, major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder and with children and adolescents with serious mental illnesses.
