Associate Professor Luke Shaefer will be presenting at the event. The subject is fighting child poverty with a universal child allowance. It will be live streamed and the hashtag #childallowance will be used.

The Youth Civil Rights Academy: Academic Innovation For Social Justice

The U-M’s Youth Civil Rights Academy, developed as a partnership between Barry Checkoway and the Office of Academic Innovation, aims to prepare a new generation of civil rights leader, through digital learning, online courses, and online educational resources; face-to-face learning, summits and workshops; youth leadership development and community action projects; and teacher professional development. This session will examine the Academy as a real-life example of using online learning as a vehicle to create new innovative institutional infrastructures with a social justice perspective.
This session is open to anyone in the U-M community.

Taking a Pulse: Examining Compassion Fatigue in Child Welfare
May 11, 2017 - 9:00 AM to 12:15 PM ET
This course will engage participants in examining organizational and individual strategies to address compassion fatigue in child welfare settings. Evidence-based research will be presented as it relates to effective practices. Exercises that focus on organizational practices and individual well-being approaches will allow participants to explore their own work situations and coping strategies. Participants will leave with a toolkit for action to combat compassion fatigue.

Basic Skills for Dialectical Behavior Therapy

DBT is an empirically supported treatment for individuals with severe emotionally regulation problems. Part of the treatment consists of teaching individuals specific skill sets in mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and crisis management. Participants will learn an overview of these skills and how to integrate these skills into their clinical practice in both a group and individual therapy setting.
