SSW Current Events Cafe

As a response to violence and social justice issues worldwide, the School of Social Work is hosting several Current Events Cafes.
Cafes provide a reflective conversational space to process, (un)learn together, and move forward social justice work - micro, mezzo, and macro.
To be responsive to current events, topics and resources will be announced via email a few days prior to each cafe.
Snacks provided.

Investing in Ability: A Discussion with Jason Turkish, Esq., "Everyday Advocacy"

Come join the School of Social Work as we welcome Jason Turkish, Esq., "...a leading voice for the disabled and those who need a fair shot, Jason uses his lifetime of personal experience, and superior legal training, to achieve life-changing results for his clients."
Mr. Turkish will explore the history of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as major legal developments. The goal of the presentation is to educate non-attorney individuals without disabilities on how they can be advocates and allies to the disability community.
Refreshments will be provided.

Leveraging Language and Area Studies Training for Your Career

Panel discussion with alums who are using language study in their field of study. Targeted to undergraduate students but open to everyone. Language and area studies programs will also be invited to join a small fair after the panel discussion.

Field Instructor Course

This course featured two PowerPoint presentations: Field Safe Beginning & ADA Training and Field Instructor Women in Leadership Presentation.
Course hosted by OFI for all Field Instructors.
A bi-annual workshop designed to train and update field instructors on field related curriculum.

Presentation: “What Makes a Safe Beginner?”
The course is geared to engage field instructors in discussions, role plays, & share information regarding student field training. University/school requirements & expectations are discussed along with a session on "what makes a safe beginner" related to assessing student abilities about when & where students can begin to function more independently & with more complex cases/issues.10:15-12:00

Afternoon Session
12:45-1:45Presentation:“Understanding and Applying the ADA in Field Instruction”
Participants will be able to access UM resources for students with disabilities and gain increased awareness of ADA guidelines to understand provisions of reasonable accommodations to ensure students with disabilities have the same opportunities as other students.1:45-3:15
Presentation: “Women in Leadership"
Evidence suggests that women face unique leadership challenges, bring diverse capabilities and hold unique characteristics in the work world today.The purpose of this workshop is to prepare participants to identify and harness the specific needs and capabilities of women. It will provide the knowledge and skills to succeed and contribute added value in their roles as leaders at any level.

Cultural Humility and Culturally Responsive Practice

Participants will learn about culturally responsive practice that supports collaboration with families in order to promote services that are culturally relevant, and that draw on the family's cultural strengths.
