    Title: Infusing Your Story into Your Practice

    The Conscious Use of Self, a concept (and an article) co-authored by Nancy E. Sherman in 2005 speaks to the social work practitioner as the "tool", or the "instrument", intentionally used to assist our clients in creating change in their lives. It also speaks to the value in (appropriate!) sharing of one's story and how to do so culturally appropriately to assist in strengthening the client-practitioner relationship.

  6. Working with Self-help, Support, and Advocacy Groups

    September 29, 2015 - 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET

    The course will review studies showing self-help groups including 12-step groups provide a huge amount of service and involve nearly as many people as professional services. Studies related to the benefits and risks of self-help groups will also be reviewed. Special attention will be given to how providers and their agencies can coordinate their activities with self-help groups. Specific strategies that add value to professional services will be discussed. The focus will be on how self-help can enhance professional services, and in turn how professional services can enhance the self-help experience. Ethical issues related to the autonomy of self-help groups and the propriety of professional involvement will be explored in relation to a variety of groups including 12-step groups. Similarities and differences between online and in person groups will be discussed. Patterns of self-help use by various cultural groups will be examined with a view toward mitigating existing discrepancies. Patterns of self-help...

    Join the Jewish Communal Leadership Program for Conversations in the Sukkah. 

    Monday 9/28 through Wednesday 9/30.

    Monday 9/28: Lunch and Learn: 12pm to 2pm to celebrate the SSW community and to share in meaningful dialogue on the Sukkot-related themes of welcoming the stranger, home, sanctuary, and impermanence. All are welcome! Pizza provided.

    Tuesday 9/29, Text Study Tuesday: Join JCLP students for a text study today inside the sukkah located in the SSW Courtyard from 12:30-1:30 pm.

    Wednesday 9/30: 5:30 PM - 7 PM Community Open House in the Sukkah  

    Sukkot is a Jewish holiday centered around the sukkah (a temporary booth), a place of celebration, harvest, and connection, that dates back to biblical times.
