Community Conversation: The Evolution of Language
November 6, 2023 - 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET
Language is continuously evolving and adapts to societal norms. Changing language can bring awareness to underlying societal issues like biases and discrimination. It can be a big step in challenging stereotypes and biases contributing to social inequalities. However, is changing language to ensure sensitivity and inclusivity enough for lasting change? If the root cause is not addressed, does it overshadow the issues that fuel the language shift? How can we, as social workers, ensure that changes in language fuel broader change in society?
This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)
About the format. With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice."

The Importance of Transit Equity
November 9, 2023 - 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM ET
Car-dependent metropolitan areas divide and isolate people from one another. Strong public transit systems and walkable and bikeable city infrastructure helps to make communities more accessible and fosters connection. This virtual discussion will focus on the impact of public transit and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure on equity, and how inaccessible, car-centric cities disproportionately marginalize and endanger BIPOC and other vulnerable communities. We will discuss how cities have been shaped by historic and ongoing discriminatory housing and transportation policies, and how transit advocates are helping to transform urban planning in cities like Ann Arbor and Detroit. Panelists include Dr. Molly Kleinman, former Chair of the Ann Arbor Transportation Commission and Managing Director of the Ford School’s of Science, Technology, and Public Policy program; Donnell Wyche, Ann Arbor transit advocate, Pastor of Vineyard Church, and an Ann Arbor Planning Commissioner; Idrees Mutahr, former activist of Motor City Freedom Riders and Project Manager with the City of Detroit’s Joe Louis Greenway, among others TBA.
