The Calm After the Storm: Exploring How Our Nervous Systems Cope with the Pandemic, and How We Move Forward
November 3, 2022 - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
This workshop will discuss the biological responses to the elevated stress that is a result of the covid-19 pandemic and other collective traumas. We will discuss different coping strategies and why some members of the community were able to manage better than others.
A portion of the workshop will be devoted to discussing collective and cumulative trauma and how both can activate our threat response cycle. We will discuss how these invisible triggers affect our community, and how to identify and manage the feelings that arise in ourselves, our students, our clients, and/or our families as a response to global events. We will also spend time discussing techniques for self-regulation, and moving forward in a (post)pandemic world.

International Coffee Hour

The Office of Global Activities hosts a bi-weekly coffee hour for all international students and visitors in the School of Social Work. In this coffee hour, we will be discussing licensure and employment after graduation in the United States. We will be joined by Michelle Woods, the Director of Career Services at the School of Social Work. She will discuss topics like licensure requirements and job search techniques for international students, and she will be available for a Q&A after her presentation. Milk tea will be served at this Coffee Hour. Please fill out the RSVP form by Wednesday, November 2 at 11:59 PM to confirm your attendance and select you milk tea flavor.

Clinton Global Initiative University Information Session

Clinton Global Initiative University provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students nationwide to take an idea for a global social impact project and move it to action. This program connects participants to mentorship, resources, funding streams, and networks of experts to build leadership capacity and bring social impact ideas into reality. The application period for the 2023 cohort of CGI U is open now through December 16!
Join us for an information session with Dr. Ashley Cureton, a current SSW faculty member and former CGI University participant, to learn more about this unique global leadership opportunity. The session will include time for Q&A.

MSW Student Self Care Workshop

Self-care is a professional and ethical obligation for social workers. What does it look like to engage in regular, intentional, effective self-care? In this 60-minute workshop, we will explore what self-care looks like in practice and share specific strategies to manage stress and improve well-being.
This workshop is for enrolled students in the School of Social Work only.

Suicide Risk Assessment and Safety Planning

Suicide is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide. Nearly 50% of individuals who end life by suicide see a primary care provider within a month of death, yet suicide risk assessment and treatment is consistently difficult in practice. With the majority of mental health services in the US being delivered by social workers, it is imperative that risk assessment and safety planning knowledge and skills are in place for our work with clients with the ultimate goal being to prevent premature suicidal death.
This webinar will discuss and present on suicide as public health issue in the US, risk and protective factors, warning signs, barriers to help-seeking, risk assessment process and risk formulation, safety planning, and cultural humility in risk assessment with use of a clinical case.
