  1. Community Conversation - Difficult Conversations

    September 3, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

We invite you to a community conversation about how we want to communicate together as a school community about particularly difficult and/or sensitive topics. This will be held in B780 at the SSW. Difficult, personal and often charged issues impact our lives and our world with tragic regularity. This conversation is a time to talk - ask questions, raise concerns and ideas, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)

About the format. A few students and faculty have decided to try something different - smaller community conversations. Our hope is that this can take topics that lend themselves better to verbal dialogue off of email and into a face-to-face (or screen-to-screen!) environment. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.

This community conversation will be held in room B780 at the SSW. This is a time for conversation - ask questions, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear!  If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)

  7. ENGAGE: Back to School: Advocating for BIPOC History in K-12 Curriculum ENGAGE: Back to School: Advocating for BIPOC History in K-12 Curriculum

    September 9, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

A students' identity and self-concept is largely shaped by representations of their community in school curriculum, the media, and broader society. But when do Black, Indigenous, and other People Of Color (BIPOC) get a chance to share their own history? Are the contributions, and histories of oppression, of BIPOC communities fairly represented in our K-12 curriculum? How does the erasure of BIPOC history in K-12 curriculum affect learning outcomes and self-concept of BIPOC students? And others?

Join us to discuss the whitewashed history we teach in our K-12 curriculum, from the arts and music, to science, civics, and math; and the fight of elected officials, scholars, and local activists pushing for curriculum reform at the policy and local levels. Speakers include State Senator Stephanie Chang, Novi School Board member and former Assistant Attorney General, Roland Hwang, Former State Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, and University of Michigan LSA American Culture Professor of Arab American studies, Dr. Matthew Stiffler.

    September 23, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

The series is offered free of charge to alumni of the U-M School of Social Work, but anyone who is interested is welcome to register. You do not need to be an alum to participate in these sessions.

This "Equity Footprint" framework is geared toward community organizations to comprehensively analyze their impact (or footprint) in advancing equity. The model for the Equity Footprint derives from the carbon footprint--both begin with the understanding that harmful systems and practices have been established as the default. Rather than simply minimizing a damaging footprint, an Equity Footprint invites the organization to enact positive, equitable change across several domains including: programs, operations, culture, leadership & governance, evaluation & learning and communications.

Undoing Racism is a community collective of students, staff, and faculty in the School of Social Work dedicated to fighting white supremacy at the individual, school, and structural levels.

This workgroup was established in 2019 after students, staff, and faculty took part in the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond Undoing Racism© workshops. Since then, the Undoing Racism workgroup has been working to implement the People’s Institute anti-racist community organizing model – recognizing that community organizing within our school is critical to move toward an anti-racist and anti-oppressive program to bring along all members of the community.

The Undoing Racism workgroup also emphasizes the role that white members of our community must take on to dismantle and undo white supremacist structures that benefit and maintain power for white people. Our work has largely been focused on building collective community – a fundamental step in the People’s Institute organizing model. Our dialogue and strategic planning to advance towards an anti-racist and anti-oppressive program and school community must begin with building relationships and strengthening community bonds to engage in internal and external anti-racism work.

Meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month from 12-2pm (with some exceptions). All members of our school community are invited to attend.

A Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event to all those who RSVP.
