  1. Community Engagement: Collaborating for Change - Launch Celebration Community Engagement: Collaborating for Change - Launch Celebration

    September 21, 2018 - 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM ET

    Our team is excited to invite you to the public launch of Community Engagement: Collaborating for Change, a new massive open online course (MOOC) opening on edX in September!

    Come hear from project team members and students, see the finished product, and learn ways you can take the course or use it in your context, such as a program, course, education abroad, engaged learning experience, student or non-profit organization, and more. What’s the course about? Now more than ever, people are seeking ways to affect change in their communities — both local and around the world. Community Engagement: Collaborating for Change is for anyone who wants to work more effectively with community members and organizations, be it through community-academic partnerships, community service and learning, education or work abroad, social change projects, community-based participatory research, non-profit internships, public scholarship, or civic performance, just to name a few.

    Key concepts and strategies:

    valuing community context and expertise;

    understanding how social identities, power, and privilege impact your interactions;

    approaches to collaborative leadership, such listening effectively, resolving conflicts, and building mutually-beneficial partnerships;

    reflecting on your work, and transitioning in and out of communities; and

    effectively managing community-engaged projects

    Developed by an interdisciplinary team of content experts from U-M, this course is designed to be both engaging and challenging, offering an accessible entry into foundational topics as well as a jumping off point to pursue work and further learning in effective community engagement. It is also a toolkit and a roadmap, providing concrete takeaways and resources to bring to practice in the field.
