This event will feature a presentation titled, "Cooperatives and community-based asset building in black communities" presented by Jessica Gordon Nembhard, PhD, Professor, Department of Africana Studies, John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
In this presentation, Dr. Gordon Nembhard traces the racial wealth inequality movement since 1999 and her frustrations with realistically addressing wealth inequality and racial wealth gaps. She outlines the journey from understanding the importance of wealth in African American and other communities, to addressing collective structures for accumulating assets and wealth for low-income people of color, and explores the role cooperatives play in creating community and collective wealth.
