Socially Just Neighborhoods: Urban Communities Addressing Violence and Incarceration

Before I became a perpetrator of gun violence, I was a victim. What I have come to understand is that hurt people hurt people.  If we talk to our youth, we'll see that they have been victimized themselves and do not know how to process their emotions in a healthy way. In this talk, I will address the following issues:

• Understanding the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on victims and witnesses of violence in urban neighborhoods
• Getting to the root of the problem – hurt people hurt people
• Understanding what our youth are trying to say when they act out in violence
• Living In Peace instead of Resting in Peace – creating a dialogue for addressing the issues that lead to violence; providing healthy outlets for youth to express their anger, frustration, pain
• School to prison pipeline and the mass incarceration of Black and Latino boys
