This course will prepare students to work for community change in a culturally diverse society. Several areas will be covered, such as the historical development and changing context of practice, relevant social science research and theory, roles of community work in the prevention of individual and social problems, and existing and emerging models and methods for creating community change. Methods to be covered include social action, social planning, political advocacy, popular education, and community development. Emphasis will be placed on socially and economically disadvantaged communities, women, and other groups.
