Course Description: | This course will focus on the factors that play a role in the social development of the child using a transactional ecological framework. The transactional perspective will permit interpreting the relative importance of what the child brings to the situation, the experience that the environment provides, and how each is affected by the other. The ecological perspective will permit an analysis of the social environment into separate systems that influence the child including the family, school, peer group, ethnic and economic status. Specific topics to be considered include the development of intimate relationships from early parental attachments to later romantic ones, the regulation of behavior from toddler assertiveness to adult conduct disorder, the relation between temperament, parenting practices and later personality, and the development of self-representations including gender and ethnic dimensions. |
