Community Conversation Around Poverty

The wealth disparity in the US between the top 1 percent and low or middle income households has been growing since the 1980s, reaching an all time high this year  (see this article). The growing wealth and income gaps can impact people living in poverty on a personal level, including their access to food, housing, medical care and other basic necessities. Poverty also impacts people disproportionately across different identities, including race, gender and disability status.

Conversion Therapy, Clinical Ethics & the Impact of Chiles v. Salazar

On March 31, the Supreme Court ruled in an 8-1 decision that Colorado’s ban on providing “conversion therapy” to minors is unconstitutional under the First Amendment and that conversion therapy is considered protected free speech. Shortly after, the NASW issued a statement condemning the SCOTUS decision, arguing that it contradicts the NASW Code of Ethics. While Chiles v. Salazar specifically concerned Colorado’s ban, 22 other states and Washington, D.C. have also banned conversion therapy practices.
