Can I complete the Online MSW program as a dual degree student?
Yes, as a full-time Online MSW student. Note that dual degrees are only an option for full-time students. Online and residential full-time students are both eligible; however, most non-social work degree programs are in person at this time.
Students must be admitted into both degree programs. Students must graduate from both programs in the same term to count course credits from their dual unit towards MSW program requirements.
If I complete the Social Work Essentials certificate program can I apply to the Online MSW degree program?
You may apply for the Online Master of Social Work (MSW) program before, during, or after starting or completing the Social Work Essentials Certificate program. Some students may want to have confirmation that they are fully admitted to the MSW program before purchasing the Social Work Essentials courses. Review the posted deadlines for the Online MSW Program and apply as early as possible.
Are International Students eligible for the Online MSW?
No. U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency status is required to pursue the Online MSW program.
Who is eligible for the Online MSW?
The online program is designed for advanced learners. We classify advanced learners as those who have advanced standing eligibility or those who have been admitted through the Social Work Essentials MSW program, U-M CASC and Social Work program, U-M Sociology and Social Work program, or UM-Dearborn Human Services and Social Work partnership.
Is the Online MSW program offered through the School of Social Work or the Rackham Graduate School at U-M?
The Online and On-Campus MSW programs are offered through the School of Social Work, which is separate from the Rackham Graduate School.
Is the Online Program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)?
Yes, this program is accredited by CSWE.
Is there a difference between the Online and On-campus MSW Programs?
The Online MSW program is designed for advanced learners that qualify for the 45-credit program. The program offers two pathways:
- Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, & Substance Abuse
- Children, Youth & Families (Formerly Welfare of Children and Families).

Can students switch between the Online and On-Campus programs?
It is strongly recommended that students who are interested in both the on-campus and online program, apply for both the Online Program and the On-Campus programs.
How long does it take to complete the Online MSW degree?
The School of Social Work offers the following opportunities to complete the Online MSW program in 45 credit hours:
- Advanced Standing for students who have completed a bachelor of social work degree and meet all of the requirements for advanced standing status.
- Social Work Essentials MSW for students who have previous human services experience.
- CASC Minor & Social Work for University of Michigan-Ann Arbor undergraduates who have declared the CASC Minor to enter the MSW program through an accelerated pathway.
- UM-Dearborn Human Services & Social Work Program for University of Michigan-Dearborn human
