This is a train-the-trainer series for school professionals interested in becoming facilitators of the Trauma-Informed Programs & Practices for Schools (TIPPS) approach. TIPPS is a research-based model intended to lessen the effects of trauma and promote safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environments for all students. Strategies and resources offered in this series will cover the TIPPS 10 core pillars of a system-change process and allow participants to customize content to address needs of their local settings.

This second session of the TIPPS Seminar Series aims to define and explain educator (including social workers) well-being in the school setting. The course also unpacks the connection between teacher well-being and student engagement. The content includes strategies to improve well-being for educators and their students.

The impact of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is becoming more widely known in recent years and especially now in response to the impacts of the pandemic. SEL is a crucial element in a trauma-informed learning environment that supports students' academic success when integrated into the fabric of the school day. There is research to support the benefit of developing and using SEL skills with students. In response, numerous resources and curriculums are available for educators to use to enhance students' SEL skill-building and development.

“We recognized the increased need for social workers to deliver online teletherapy and telehealth services in the current pandemic,” says Alia Wesala, Assistant Director of Continuing Education. “Many social workers have been forced to work with clients online or by phone for the first time, and they were not prepared for it. It is stressful to suddenly have to figure out how to serve clients remotely.

Michelle Duprey is the director of Integrated Health Care at Starfish Family Services, which offers behavioral health services in Livonia, Dearborn, and Westland, and in Inkster within Western Wayne Family Health Centers. “A lot more health and hospital systems, private practices, and group practices are hearing about integrated health. They are just not quite sure where to start. This program is a great way to jump in, see what it looks like, and prepare staff to do the work,” Duprey says.

What is Antisemitism, and how is it manifesting itself today? Is it on the rise globally? How does it differ in different parts of the world? A panel of U-M faculty including  Karla Goldman, Sol Drachler Professor of Social Work will discuss the issues surrounding antisemitism in our world.
