ENGAGE will be hosting a Community Engagement Showcase!

This celebratory and informative showcase will highlight the work of students, staff, and faculty in the community and will allow attendees to network and mingle with one another. This is a chance to connect to the exciting work already underway and to explore ways to contribute meaningfully in the future. Please join us!

This event will be held in a hybrid format, both in person at the School of Social Work and virtually via Zoom. Information on how to join the Zoom meeting will be sent to attendees closer to the event date. Food will be served to everyone attending in person.

This event, which is co-sponsored by the Office of Global Activities, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Global Social Work Practice Pathway aims to bring together all the members of the SSW community who are interested in engaging in conversations about social justice from a global lens! It will be a great opportunity to connect, learn about how social justice issues manifest in our different home communities, and have foods that tell stories about diverse cultural backgrounds.

During the event, there will be tables set up where attendees who are interested in discussing a similar social justice issue can sit together and discuss how that issue manifests in different communities across the globe. Participants will have the opportunity to rotate to different tables to discuss more than one theme. At the end of the event, everyone will come together to talk about their experiences and what they have learned.

Students, faculty members, and staff will be serve dinner from different restaurants in Ann Arbor that serve food reflecting various global cuisine, in order to further celebrate diverse cultural backgrounds.

This course will focus on the usage of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) with the Queer community in addressing mental health concerns. The Queer community experiences a large amount of discrimination, both on a micro and macro lens that leads to ongoing stressors. These stressors and environmental factors lead to a higher prevalence rate of mental illness within the Queer community. DBT, an evidence-based psychotherapy, has been shown to be beneficial for overall mental health, addressing self-injurious behaviors, emotional challenges, Major Depressive Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This course will address how to apply and use DBT with clients from the LGBTQIA2S+ community in an affirming and validating way.

This course will cover Minority Stress Theory, and Biosocial Theory as well as review and introduce skills from the 4 core modules of DBT, mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and effective communication.

The School of Social Work Office of Global Activities, U-M Spectrum Center, and U-M Center for Global and Intercultural Study are collaborating to host a Trans and Nonbinary Passport Clinic!

The Washtenaw County Clerk's office will assist students, faculty, staff, and community members to apply for, renew, or make changes to their passport in the form of a name change or updated gender marker. This event is hosted specifically for folks needing a gender marker or name change on their passport, but all individuals applying for a new or renewed passport are welcome to attend.

Please be aware that all fees required to obtain a passport must be made on the day of the event. Payments for the passport book or card must be payable to U.S. Department of State. Payments for the processing fee must be payable to Washtenaw County Clerk. All payments MUST be in the form of a check or a money order. Financial support may be available for students applying for a passport who are requesting name or gender maker change.

Join us to explore how cultural traditions, values, and practices can play a pivotal role in coping with and overcoming mental health barriers. We will dive deep into the profound connection between culture and mental health, exploring how cultural traditions, values, and practices can empower individuals to overcome mental health challenges.

This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community. To aid the conversation, space will be limited. (We know it's coming up soon, so if you miss it, don't fear! If there is a lot of interest in this topic, we can hold another session soon.)

About the format. With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.
