This course presents advanced topics in both micro and macro social work practice. The topics may include emerging cross-cutting practice methods, advanced application of methods covered in other required methods courses, and applications of methods in specific populations.
This elective mini-course is designed to increase students’ awareness, knowledge, and critical skills related to diversity, equity, inclusion, human rights, social and economic justice regarding people with disabilities. The topics of this mini-course include developing a framework for how to interact with people with disabilities, the difference between visible and non-visible disabilities, and how disabilities can affect individuals depending on whether they are children, teenagers, adults, or seniors. Issues pertaining to dimensions of diversity (e.g. ability, age, class, color, culture, ethnicity, family structure, gender [including gender identity and gender expiration], marital status, national origin, race, religion or spirituality, sex, and sexual orientation) will be given attention, particularly in areas of policy development and service delivery for people with disabilities. This course is appropriate for those who are studying micro, meso or macro areas as people with disabilities are part of all aspects of society and are impacted by decisions made at all levels including but not limited to decisions made by themselves, their families, their schools, their community, their employers and/or the government.
