This course presents advanced topics in both micro and macro social work practice.  The topics may include emerging cross-cutting practice methods, advanced application of methods covered in other required methods courses, and applications of methods in specific populations.

This mini-course will examine the historical context of how geography or “place” and poverty mutually reinforce each other through policy mechanisms such as housing covenants (white flight), tax policy (e.g., educational system differences), and shifts in employment opportunity in urban vs. suburban areas. We will examine these issues through the specific lens of race and class, as they have emerged to influence and perpetuate inequality in Flint and Detroit specifically.
