You are invited to join the School of Social Work Undoing Racism Working Group for a group outing to the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) to experience Black Wall Street Journey: Re and De Imagining Black Progress.

This exhibition features artist Rick Lowe’s largest institutional solo exhibition in the United States and explores Black prosperity, resilience, and self-determination through painting, sculpture, and public art installations.

Inspired by the rebuilding of Tulsa’s historic Greenwood neighborhood following the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, Lowe began Black Wall Street Journey in 2018. The project examines how Black progress is represented, measured, and understood, with particular attention to the forces shaping Black wealth and opportunity, including income, education, housing, and business ownership.

The exhibition is the culmination of Lowe’s three-year residency at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (ISR). Through the intersection of art, data, research, and community engagement, the exhibit invites us to reflect on the historical and contemporary conditions that shape Black prosperity and possibilities for the future.

We hope you will join us for this opportunity to engage with art, deepen our collective learning, and reflect on the themes of racial equity, economic justice, and Black self-determination.
