Diversity, equity and inclusion are buzzwords that many institutions have incorporated into their missions as they strive to become more diverse. However, many organizations are uncertain about the steps needed to turn intention into action. It is imperative for social work practitioners to be aware of how to promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the organizations that we serve.
This course is designed to increase knowledge and understanding of issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion, use critical analysis of DEI models and integrate this knowledge to envision more culturally grounded approaches. Students will engage in how historical, social, and political factors impact and possibly prevent the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion in many of our institutions. Students will consider social policy advocacy and think about how we can advance relevant DEI policies to deliver more effective services and create more inclusive environments and communities. Students will also gain a better understanding of self and how their own positionalities may impact their work around DEI issues and change.
