The Certificate in Integrated Behavioral Health and Primary Care (IBHPC) is designed for direct providers - such as social workers, nurses, care managers, psychologists, and physicians - who deliver or plan to deliver integrated health services.
Whether new to or experienced in integrated health care, participants will learn knowledge and skills to support them in serving patients and within their roles on an integrated team. Behavioral health providers, nurses, physicians, health care managers, and other professionals will have the opportunity to learn from over 30 multidisciplinary faculty experts, providing a well-rounded look at integrated health care. At the end of this program, participants will be able to develop and or participate in an Integrated Health Care model in a practice/clinic/health system that successfully serves patients in an integrated structure using integrated tools, interventions, and team-based care.
The program offers three health care focused track options and we are excited to announce a new Schools track option so participants can tailor their learning to the populations they serve.

- What to Expect
As a result of participating in the IBHPC certificate program, participants will be able to:
- Understand the public policy context of integrated behavioral health and primary care
- Strengthen assessment, intervention and consultation skills critical to integrated care
Courses address core themes in integrated clinical practice, including:
- Culturally-responsive practice
- Recovery-oriented and strengths-based care philosophies
- Evidence-based practice
- Professional ethics
- Self-examination and self-care

The certificate program in IBHPC is an interactive online learning experience hosted via zoom and uses our web-based learning management system, canvas.
Participants require access to high-speed Internet and a computer with a camera and microphone. You do not need special skills to participate successfully in a distance-learning environment. We will provide detailed, user-friendly instructions and technical support. We have found user-friendly webcams with microphones for as low as $25.00.

Discounts are available as follows:
- For UM SSW doctoral students and UM MSW field instructors, the cost is $1,075 (single track) or $1,400 (combined tracks) per person.

The University of Michigan School of Social Work, provider #1212, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 5/15/2026-5/15/2029.

The IBHPC instructional team is an interdisciplinary group of professionals committed to promoting and establishing integrated, culturally-responsive, and recovery-oriented systems of care. The instructional roster reflects expertise from many disciplines, including social work, nursing, psychology, and medicine, and is comprised of front-line clinical staff operating in real-world integrated health environments as well as nationally recognized scholars and academicians.

I believe that after taking the course, I now have a better understanding of integrated care, and I have a couple of mental activities to share with my clients when they are going through depression or having a hard time. Although I was aware of how to accurately complete assessments on my patients, I believe that now I am better equipped to have more meaningful conversations with those patients that may be suffering from various mental illnesses, or simply dealing with life's struggles.

I have wanted to have some formal study of behavioral health for my entire PA career of over 30 years. I have naturally included it in my care of patients all this time, but always felt somehow I was 'winging it' or 'flying by the seat of my pants'. My emotional care of patients in primary care was always a natural and critical component of my work, but now you have given me some concrete tools to enhance my passion and care of our patients. The scope of the program was perfect. I could listen to some presenters forever! I took copious notes to refer back to and for the purpose of sharing with our staff, including 6 family practice physicians, and 3 Physician Assistants (4 counting me). The setup was perfect, live lectures and self-study. The time frame, evenings for live lectures was perfect. I regret no information on tele psychiatry. It was mentioned, but no actual lecture. The resources were copious. The websites offered were great and so helpful. The knowledge base of presenters was great. Could have done without an entire lecture on oral health. Psychopharmacology lecture and info was amazing.
I really enjoyed this course and got so much out of it. Wonderful breadth of topics and information with many fantastic presenters. Michelle's implementation expertise throughout was also helpful. The course also did a great job of highlighting the theoretical underpinnings of all topics, but also providing practical tools and approaches. Unlike many other training, I'm leaving this feeling like I can implement what I learned immediately.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have engaged with this course. It was especially nice during this period of working remotely and feeling somewhat disconnected at times to be able to meet with other professions weekly and learn and engage. I appreciated the interactive portions of the lectures and how each instructor welcomed and encouraged our participation.
I think it is a huge strength that the attendees are in various positions within integrated behavioral health settings, so we all provide different perspectives and experiences within breakout rooms when discussing topic areas. Additionally, I enjoyed the variety of topics covered and hearing from experts within each topic area. As a graduate student still, I also really enjoyed the conversations around finances as those are not topics we are informed on in the graduate school setting.
