On March 31, the Supreme Court ruled in an 8-1 decision that Colorado’s ban on providing “conversion therapy” to minors is unconstitutional under the First Amendment and that conversion therapy is considered protected free speech. Shortly after, the NASW issued a statement condemning the SCOTUS decision, arguing that it contradicts the NASW Code of Ethics. While Chiles v. Salazar specifically concerned Colorado’s ban, 22 other states and Washington, D.C. have also banned conversion therapy practices.
This conversation will explore the implications of Chiles v. Salazar and the ethical tensions between free speech and clinicians’ duty of care as they pertain to LGBTQ+ clients and everyday practice. We welcome multiple perspectives on this issue.
