We invite you to a Community Conversation about whether we are experiencing the beginnings of a transgender genocide in the US.
In recent years, the United States has progressively enacted legislation that marginalizes transgender, non-binary, and intersex people. This legislation has eroded antidiscrimination protections, restricted access to gender-affirming care, and erased trans identities from public life, which has led to increased violence against trans people and worsening mental health among trans folks. Numerous organizations have identified these attacks as the early stages of a transgender genocide. In this Community Conversation, we will come together to discuss these heavy proclamations, what they mean, and how they correlate with current events.
If desired, you can review these supplemental resources before our conversation:
- Experts Warn U.S. in Early Stages of Genocide Against Trans Americans by the Lemkin Institute
- State Legislatures and Trans* Genocide (?) in the United States by Shannon Fyfe
This is a time for conversation – to share feelings, raise concerns, and talk together as a school community.
About the format
With these smaller Community Conversations, our hope is to explore restorative dialogue and build community, creating a space where we are all teachers and learners. We will draw heavily on practices from intergroup dialogue and restorative justice.
