If I am offered a GSSA , GSI, or GSRA appointment, am I eligible for GradCare without a social security number (SSN)?
Yes. Students need to complete the regular enrollment process through Wolverine Access within the first 30 days of the appointment. You can also add eligible dependents who do not have a SSN to your health insurance during the enrollment process.
What happens if my Employment Authorization Document (EAD) expires in the middle of my GSSA, GSI, or GSRA or appointment?
Students are not eligible to work without a valid EAD. If your EAD expires in the middle of the semester, an e-mail notification will be sent to the Human Resources contact person in your program and your appointment will be terminated. There are significant financial implications of a GSA position terminating in the middle of semester including rescinding the tuition payment, no additional salary, and canceling your health insurance. Please contact the Human Resources contact person in your program for next steps.
Can I continue to work if my Employment Authorization Document (EAD) expires?
No. Students are not eligible to work without a valid EAD. Students cannot obtain a new GSI, GSRA or GSSA appointment without a valid EAD.
What types of Graduate Student Assistant positions are available at the School of Social Work?
Graduation student instructor (GSI) and graduate student research assistant (GSRA) are not available to MSW students; however each year MSW students are employed by other departments and offices on campus. GSI, GSRA and GSSA (collectively referred to as GSA) positions typically include a monthly salary as well as full tuition (for appointments of .25 or higher) health insurance (including dependents) and dental insurance (Option 1) at no cost to the student.

Does the School of Social Work offer full-tuition awards?
Yes; however, there are very few full tuition awards available for any MSW student. The majority of School of Social Work merit-based awards cover only partial tuition amounts.
Are F-1 or J-1 students eligible to work while enrolled in the MSW Program?
Yes, F-1 and J-1 students are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week on-campus while enrolled at the School. Visit the UM International Center webpage for detailed information.
Are International students eligible to apply for financial aid?
International MSW applicants may apply for scholarship (merit) aid from the School of Social Work. International students also may be interested in applying to a special program (Child Welfare Scholarship Program, Community-Based Initiative in Detroit, Geriatric Scholarship Program, Global Activities Scholars Program, Integrated Health Scholarship Program, Jewish Communal Leadership Program, National Community Scholars Program, or New Leaders in African-Centered Social Work. How do I apply to a special program?
If you would like to apply to a special program, then please answer "yes" to the question, "Do you plan to apply to an SSW Special Program?" found on the Financial Assistance page of the MSW online application and then check the special program checkbox of the program to which you wish to apply. Should I wait until I have been admitted to apply for financial aid for the MSW Program?
No. It is best for students to apply for financial aid as soon as possible. The School of Social Work Financial Aid Form should be submitted with the MSW application. The FAFSA is available each October. Be sure to review special program deadlines.
What scholarship opportunities are available for the MSW Program?
There are numerous scholarship opportunities. The School offers Dean’s Scholarships, which are awarded based on the undergraduate GPA of incoming students (as calculated for admissions review purposes) in addition to a strong commitment to the mission of the School of Social Work. The School also offers Merit Scholarships based on strong academic and/or social work-related experience or based on a strong commitment to the mission of the School. No separate application is necessary for applicants to be reviewed for these awards. Several other named scholarships are also awarded based upon
