Overview: This is a 16 hour/week internship to support two community initiatives: (1) community outreach in Stockbridge, MI with time spent supporting Stockbridge Community Oureach pantry and services, Stockbridge Area Senior Center, and Stockbridge Open Air Market (September only); and (2) 5HF’s community mental health collaborative, called One Big Thing, partnering with Washtenaw County Community Mental Health, Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System, Chelsea Hospital, and Michigan Medicine/Family Medicine.The mission of the 5 Healthy Towns Foundation (5HF) is to cultivate personal and community wellness for its region. Our work centers around prevention and community health to promote community connections, optimism, resiliency, and engagement. https://www.5healthytowns.org/
In 2019, 5HF launched an initiative focused on mental health and emotional well-being, to impact work in 3 focus areas: social isolation, access to mental health services, and prevention and recovery of substance use disorders. This position will provide support to community action teams working collaboratively under the guidance of a Stewardship Council, who is charged with making grant decisions and investing in intentional interdepedent decision-making. https://www.onebigconnection.org/. This position will also spend 8 hours/week in the field supporting community services which help to achieve this mission.
Desired Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is studying in a health-related or community organization program, at the master’s degree level. The Intern should have an interest in health behavior/education, behavioral health services, community health programming, community partnerships and collaboration. Proficient computer skills. Strong communication skills, problem solving abilities, a positive attitude.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Applies community-based assessment strategies to understand the needs of diverse stakeholder groups, gaps in behavioral health services, and the impact of this in local community change efforts.
Develops strategies for effective relationship building among multiple sectors, including residents with lived experience, school districts, non-profit organizations, and behavioral health treatment providers.
Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and project deadlines, including expertise in the use of facilitation tools to run online, offline and hybrid meetings.
Maintains organized and accessible Action Team documents including meeting agendas, minutes, summaries, and data reports.
Actively participates in planning and facilitating quarterly community leadership meetings, quarterly action team meetings, and monthly core team meetings - virtually and in-person.
Designs effective evaluation processes to share with partners for appropriate follow-up.
Creates appropriate social media.
Assists with writing a monthly newsletter and an article for Connected magazine.
Provides hands-on assistance at community events including cooking workshops, farmers market setup, food distribution programs, teen physical activity events, and others on request.
Salary Stipend and Schedule: $20/hour, paid bi-weekly. This is an onsite position with offices and community outreach work in Chelsea and Stockbridge, MI. Students should be available for weekly check-in meetings with supervisor and consultation on assigned work tasks.
