About Fair Housing Center of Southeast & Mid Michigan:
The Fair Housing Center of Southeast & Mid Michigan is a nonprofit civil rights organization that investigates illegal housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, familial status, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, income source, and student status. Based in Ypsilanti and with a satellite office in Lansing, we directly serve the 10 counties of Clinton, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Shiawassee, and Washtenaw, and respond to inquiries from 20 additional counties within Michigan’s northeast Lower Peninsula.
About the Role:
Primary responsibilities will include:
- Advocating with complainants who have experienced housing discrimination to help them exercise their fair housing rights.
- Writing requests for reasonable accommodation and modification.
- Working with medical and mental health providers, caseworkers, attorneys, and other agency representatives to best meet the needs of our mutual clients.
- Utilizing an online database to track casework.
- Assisting with general office administrative work, as needed (required of all staff)
Additional responsibilities may include:
- Taking complaints of illegal housing discrimination over the phone. Informing complainants of their rights under fair housing law. Making referrals to local community service agencies.
- Presenting/facilitating fair housing trainings to the community.
- Representing the FHC at meetings, community events, and other outreach opportunities.
- Attending and assisting with FHC-hosted events.
- Collaborating with FHC staff to design and implement undercover investigations (tests).
- Other tasks as assigned.
