This course is taught by various members of the program faculty. Each version of the course has its own subtitle, some being offered one time only while others are repeated and may evolve into regular courses with their own course number and title. This is an appropriate selection for upper-level undergraduate students.

Topic Description: This course grapples with the question of why sexual misconduct is such a persistent feature of campus life. Students will learn what sexual citizenship is and how it intersects with race, gender, sexual orientation, and other identities to influence one’s experiences with gender-based violence. There will be comprehensive sex education on human sexuality, relationships, and consent, integrating biological, psychological, social, and ethical perspectives to empower individuals with knowledge and skills for making informed, respectful, and healthy decisions. Lectures will introduce key concepts and frameworks, while discussion sections provide an opportunity for deeper exploration and application of the material.

The course examines the structural and cultural factors that contribute to gender-based violence on college campuses, from the geography of campus space to norms about “doing gender” and “hooking up.” Students will also examine efforts to change campus culture, including the role of student activism, institutional policies, and community engagement in creating a safe campus environment for learning.
