SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES Research Coordinator at STEP Lab University of Michigan School of Social Work STEP Research Lab
The Supporting Transition and Employment Pathways (STEP) Lab is dedicated to advancing disability inclusion so individuals with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of life. Housed within the University of Michigan School of Social Work, the lab conducts community-based research focused on transition-age youth, disability inclusion, workforce development, and school-based interventions.
Position Summary We are seeking a Research Coordinator to support the implementation and coordination of community-based participatory research projects. This role includes coordinating multi-site studies, managing research operations and data systems, supporting regulatory compliance, supervising research staff, and collaborating with community and academic partners.
Key Responsibilities
· Coordinate day-to-day research operations across multiple community-based projects and study sites · Support study development activities, including protocols, assessments, recruitment materials, and curriculum adaptation · Prepare and manage IRB submissions, amendments, continuing reviews, and compliance documentation · Manage participant screening, intake, consent, scheduling, and follow-up processes · Coordinate participant recruitment and engagement activities in virtual and in-person settings · Support the development and maintenance of research databases and tracking systems (e.g., REDCap) · Oversee data workflows including collection, organization, coding, quality monitoring, reporting, and secure data storage. · Conduct and summarize qualitative data coding using NVivo or related software · Create and maintain training, outreach, implementation, and research materials · Support project timelines, documentation, task tracking, and operational hand-offs across project teams · Serve as a liaison between internal staff, external research partners, community partners, schools, and other stakeholders as needed · Support the hiring, onboarding, training, and supervision of research assistants and student staff · Assist with grant-related activities, reports, presentations, and supporting documentation · Attend and facilitate project meetings and community engagement activities as needed
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, education, disability studies, sociology, public health, or a related field · Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines · Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders · Ability to work independently and problem-solve in fast-paced environments · Experience with research or data management platforms (e.g., REDCap, Qualtrics, NVivo, Microsoft Excel)
· Commitment to ethical research practices and social work values · Experience with qualitative data coding and research reporting · Reliable transportation for occasional site visits and community engagement activities
Preferred Qualifications
· Master’s degree in a related field · Experience coordinating academic, clinical, or community-based research projects · Experience with human subjects research and IRB processes · Experience working with individuals with disabilities or transition-age youth · Interest in disability inclusion and community-engaged research
Work schedule and location: This position is eligible for flexible and remote work arrangements. Some in-person activities, meetings, and site visits are required, including completion of onboarding paperwork at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.
Compensation: $45,000-$55,000 based on relevant experience
