Shirley Lockery joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1990 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1998. Prior to her appointment at the School of Social Work, Lockery earned a certificate in gerontology and practiced for many years as a registered nurse. She also was a faculty member at San Diego State University from 1983 to 1990. She retired in 2003 as associate professor emerita.
Her research and teaching interests are in health and gerontology, with a primary focus on racial and ethnic minority elders. She used the Health and Retirement Survey, a nationally representative longitudinal data set with an African-American and Hispanic oversample, to conduct research in the area of health (i.e., health promotion, prevention, functional status), family support, and retirement.
As a social gerontologist, Associate Professor Lockery has worked extensively on health issues surrounding ethnic and racial minorities. Her primary interests are in ethnogerontology, aging policy and services, and health policy and services. In recognition of her outstanding leadership in the National Institutes on Minority Aging, she received an award of appreciation. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers.
