Sandra Leiblum, PhD, was the director of sexual and relationship services at the New Jersey Center for Sexual Wellness and a clinical professor of clinical pharmacology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She also conducted an active private practice for individuals and couples in Bridgewater, NJ. For 35 years, she was Director of the Center for Sexual and Relationship Health and a professor of psychiatry at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ. Dr. Leiblum was a leader in the field of human sexuality and sex therapy. Under her direction, the Human Sexuality Program at her medical school provided thousands of medical students and residents with a foundation in sexual medicine during the annual "Sex Week Program." She was the editor of 11 books, including Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy, which was in its 4th edition and was arguably the gold standard for practitioners interested in learning current approaches to the treatment of sexual problems. She was also an active researcher with over 130 peer-reviewed articles related to male and female sexuality, sexual function assessment, menopause and infertility. She was the first to identify the syndrome of persistent genital arousal disorder and conducted major research relating to this distressing problem. Finally, Dr. Leiblum was the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Masters and Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Sex Therapy and Research, the Professional Standards of Excellence Award from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and the Richard J. Cross Award for outstanding contributions to the field of sexuality education, among others. Dr. Leiblum is an honorary founding member of the University of Michigan Sexual Health Certificate Program advisory board.
