This foundational course introduces students to the purpose, principles and practices of social work research, and is designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to critically engage scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice. Through an exploration of research terminology, ethical standards, methodological frameworks, and the role of research in micro, mezzo, and macro contexts, students will gain an understanding of the political, cultural, and social justice dimensions of research. Special attention is given to the integration of privilege, oppression, diversity, and social justice (PODS), situating research within the broader context of equity and anti-oppressive practice. The course lays the groundwork for developing research-informed practice and practice-informed research, emphasizing the importance of cultural responsiveness, critical consciousness, and social responsibility in the advancement of knowledge and practice in the social work profession.
